Skaland Mine — source credentials

Skaland mine on Senja island, northern Norway, has supplied European industry without interruption since 1932. Single mine, single origin, full traceability from ore face to shipment. Ore grade 31% Cg — the world's highest for any operating flake graphite mine, resulting in lower processing energy and a smaller carbon footprint per tonne than any competing source.

Active · Skaland, Senja Island, Norway

The Skaland graphite mine sits on the island of Senja in Troms county, northern Norway. First exploited commercially in 1932, it has operated continuously for over 90 years — one of the most reliable and documented graphite sources in the world.

The deposit is geologically exceptional. With an average ore grade of 31% graphitic carbon — the world's highest for any operating flake graphite mine — Skaland requires less ore per tonne of product than any comparable operation globally. The resulting concentrate averages 91% Cg, upgradeable to 99% Cg with further processing.

Today Skaland is the largest natural graphite producer in Europe and one of the leading producers globally, processing approximately 40,000 tonnes of ore per year.

🇪🇺 EU Critical Raw Material

Graphite is classified as an EU Critical Raw Material. Skaland mine is strategically important to European battery and industrial supply chains — and fully traceable under EU battery regulation requirements.

Norway's renewable energy advantage: The Skaland processing facility runs on Norway's near-100% hydro and wind electricity grid — giving Skaland graphite one of the lowest upstream carbon footprints of any graphite source globally (~1–2 t CO₂e/t vs 5–10 t for synthetic graphite).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What documentation is provided with each shipment? +
Every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (Cg%, particle size distribution, moisture), MSDS/SDS, REACH declaration (CAS 7782-42-5), CMR, and Country of Origin certificate. Extended packages — EU Battery Regulation Annex X traceability data, ESG documentation, or nuclear-application documentation — are available on request.
What purity grades are available? +
We supply six standard grades: SGF-80 (≥80% Cg) for basic industrial and foundry use, SGF-91 (≥91% Cg) for refractory and industrial use, SGF-94 (≥94% Cg) for lubricants and coatings, SGF-96 (≥96% Cg) for high-temperature applications and EMI shielding, SGF-98 (≥98% Cg) for Li-ion battery anodes, and SGF-99 (≥99% Cg) for battery anode material and graphene precursor. Custom particle sizes (D50) are available for all grades.
What is the minimum order quantity? +
The minimum order quantity is 20 metric tonnes. Evaluation samples are available for new customers prior to placing a full order. Graphite is shipped FCA Skaland, Norway, or CIF to your port on request.
Is Skaland graphite REACH compliant? +
Yes. Natural graphite (CAS 7782-42-5) is registered under REACH. Every shipment includes a Certificate of Analysis (CoA), MSDS/SDS, REACH declaration, and Country of Origin certificate. Extended documentation packages are available for nuclear and other regulated applications.
Is spot supply available, or only long-term contracts? +
Both. We supply on a spot basis and under annual or multi-year supply agreements. Long-term contracts can include fixed-volume commitments, price escalation clauses and agreed lead times. Contact us to discuss the arrangement that fits your procurement model.
How does Skaland compare to Asian-sourced graphite for EU compliance? +
Skaland operates fully outside Chinese export licensing. Single-mine origin satisfies EU Battery Regulation Annex X traceability requirements and simplifies ESG supply chain audits. Norway's near-100% renewable electricity grid gives Skaland an upstream carbon footprint of ~1–2 t CO₂e/t — well below the 5–10 t typical for synthetic graphite and most Asian natural graphite sources.
